The ODI World Cup 2023 will begin in just over a month, and the ten competing nations are currently finalising their squads for the mega event. Several of India's players are still recuperating from injuries, and their availability is uncertain. As a result, the Indian cricket team has a lot of work to do before finalising their squad.

In the midst of widespread debates regarding India's best World Cup squad, the Star Sports expert council has selected their 15-man squad for the Asia Cup 2023, which begins on August 30. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri was a member of the council that selected Tilak Varma for the team. Varma recently made his T20I debut against the West Indies, but he has yet to make his ODI debut.

In addition to Varma, the team consists of four spinners: Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja. The seam options are Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, and Hardik Pandya.

Meanwhile, the batting consists of Shumban Gill, Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma. Varma and Kishan are the team's two wicketkeeper options.

The squad has been selected contingent upon KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer's inability to reach full fitness prior to the continental cup. Notably, both batsmen are undergoing simulations of 50-over games at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru to demonstrate their match fitness. In addition to batting, the pair will need to maintain their fielding endurance to withstand the rigours of a 50-over match.

KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer in race to gain fitness

On the other hand, Rahul, who underwent surgery a few months ago, must show that he is fit enough to maintain wicket for the entire 50 overs.

Notably, the Asia Cup begins on the 30th of August, and the selection committee will name the squad for the continental tournament within the next few days. Therefore, Iyer and Rahul have limited time to regain their match fitness, or else India will have to make a number of personnel adjustments.
