The much-anticipated fourth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) is scheduled to begin on July 30 after Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced the LPL 2023 Schedule schedule on June 18. Similar to previous seasons, the upcoming season of the premier league will feature five teams competing for the coveted championship.
In the group stage, the five teams - Colombo Strikers, Dambulla Aura, Galle Titans, Jaffna Kings, and B-Love Kandy - will play up to 20 matches, followed by four knockout games. The teams will compete in a double round-robin format, meaning that each team will face every other team twice in the group phase. On Sunday, July 30, the defending champions Jaffna Kings will face the Colombo Strikers in the opening match.
The top four franchises on the points table will advance to the semifinals - Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the summit clash, which will take place on Sunday, August 20, with a reserve day on Monday, August 21.
Jaffna Kings have dominated the competition since its inception, having won three consecutive championships since 2020. The fourth season of the LPL will take place at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo and the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy.
The competition's first part will be held in Colombo, followed by the second leg in Kandy. The tournament will return to Colombo for the playoffs, an appropriate location for the tournament's conclusion.
SLC decided to hold a player auction in the manner of the Indian Premier League, which concluded on June 14, as fans witnessed a variety of cricketers being acquired by the five franchises. For the record, the most expensive athlete was Dilshan Madushanka, who was signed by the defending champions Jaffna for a staggering $92,000 in the accelerated round. With nearly a month remaining until the tournament begins, teams have begun brainstorming strategies to win the prestigious championship.
