Stuart Broad to retire from International Cricket after Oval Test

The legendary England pacer Stuart Broad decided to end his cricket career following the conclusion of the Ashes series in 2023. Notably, the pacer informed James Anderson and Joe Root, two of his teammates and game stalwarts, of his decision on Friday evening. In addition, it was asserted that Broad had tears in his eyes while announcing his retirement.

Notably, Broad took his 600th Test wicket at Old Trafford in Manchester last week. Consequently, he became the fifth most successful bowler in the globe. In addition, he is only the second English bowler to have taken 600 wickets, after James Anderson.

Broad stated that he has spent a considerable amount of time contemplating his decision to end his career. Moreover, he added that he enjoys competing against Australia, their archrivals. The lanky pacer also considers 'The Ashes' to be cricket's most revered event, so he believes that this was the ideal moment to end his lengthy career.

"I've been considering it for some time, a few weeks. "England versus Australia has always been the pinnacle for me - I have loved the battles with Australia that have come my way and the team's way, I have a love affair with Ashes, and I think I wanted my last bat and bowl in Ashes cricket," said Broad.

"I told Stokesy last night and the changing room this morning, and to be honest, it just felt like the right time. I didn't want friends or Nottinghamshire team-mates to see things that might come out, so I prefer to just say it now, and just give it my best shot in the final Australia innings," he added.

Broad surpassed Ian Botham as the leading wicket-taker in 'The Ashes'

Interestingly, since 2009, Stuart Broad has never missed a home Ashes series. The 37-year-old has taken 104 wickets at a respectable average of 26.56 in 25 Test matches. As a consequence, Broad broke the record previously held by the legendary Ian Botham for most Test wickets against Australia.

The pacer has taken 151 wickets in his Ashes career. Recently, he caught Usman Khawaja to attain 150 wickets. Broad has the opportunity to add to his victims tally in Australia's fourth innings on the fourth day of this test, when they will be attempting to win. Notably, the Nottingham-born cricketer made his England Test debut against Sri Lanka away from home in 2007.
