Sri Lanka announces squad for World Cup 2023, big names back

Sri Lanka have officially unveiled their 15-member squad for the ODI World Cup 2023, scheduled to take place in cricket's sacred land, India. The island nation has managed to cobble together a squad that is poised to make its imprint on the grandest stage of them all, despite the tumultuous tides of injury setbacks that have plagued several of its key players.

Dasun Shanaka stands resolute as he undertakes the captaincy and leads the Sri Lankan contingent into the marquee event, dispelling all rumors and doubts. Wanindu Hasaranga, Mahesh Theekshana, and Dilshan Madhushanka's physical fitness is a source of enduring doubt. The Sri Lankan administration has cast light on this issue, emphasizing that their participation is contingent on their physical condition.

Hasaranga contends with a severe grade three hamstring rupture, Theekshana with a persistent grade two hamstring injury, and Madhushanka with a torn oblique muscle sustained during practice.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has methodically named two reserves to accompany the squad to the 2023 World Cup in anticipation of any unforeseen circumstances. Dushan Hemantha, whose last ODI appearance was against India on September 17 at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, and Chamika Karunaratne, who was last seen in action against New Zealand in Hamilton on March 31, 2023, have been entrusted with the responsibility of providing reinforcement.

Tough World Cup journey of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's path to the World Cup has not been an easy one. The team had to navigate the treacherous waters of World Cup qualifiers to earn a coveted spot in the championship tournament. In addition to the Netherlands, Sri Lanka emerged victorious from the qualifier final in Harare, earning a trip to India. On October 7, the Sri Lankan leopards will begin their World Cup campaign against South Africa at the legendary Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
