Issy Wong returns to T20I squad for Women's Ashes

England has announced a formidable sixteen-member squad for the T20 International leg of the Women's Ashes. Issy Wong, who was not considered for England's T20 World Cup squad in South Africa earlier this year, has been recalled to the team.

During the 2023 Women's Premier League season, the 21-year-old's performances garnered all the attention. Wong took 15 wickets over the course of 10 innings, with a strike rate of 13 and an economy rate of 6.4. Her heroics with the ball aided Mumbai in winning the inaugural WPL season and enabled her return to the national team.

Danielle Gibson received her first call-up to the team alongside Wong. The all-rounder traveled with the team as a reserve during the World Cup and was included in the squad for the one-off Ashes Test last week.

"We're looking forward to our T20 matches in the upcoming Ashes Series. It's wonderful to have them rejoin us. Several of the selected players have performed exceptionally well for England A against Australia A, Sky Sports quoted Jon Lewis as saying.

Danielle Gibson is selected for the first time to our T20 squad; she has been performing well at the regional level and has the capacity to impact the game when called upon.

Following her triumph with the Mumbai Indians in the Women's Premier League, Issy Wong rejoins the T20 squad. It will be fascinating to see how her game has evolved and grown as a consequence of those high-pressure WPL encounters," Lewis said.

The first T20I between England and Australia will take place at Edgbaston on July 1; the second and third games will take place at Kia Oval and Lords on June 5 and 8, respectively.
