A Bangladeshi cricketer was embroiled in controversy on Monday due to discriminatory social media posts condemning working women, just days after making a spectacular international debut.

Bowler Tanzim Hasan Sakib dismissed India captain Rohit Sharma with only his fourth delivery in international cricket on Friday, when the two teams met in the Asia Cup. He then maintained his composure in the final over to secure victory for Bangladesh.

After the revelation of his misogynistic social media postings, women's rights activists and feminists reacted negatively to the 20-year-old's acclaim.Last year, Tanzim posted on Facebook, "If the wife works, her husband's rights are not guaranteed." "If the mother is employed, the child's rights are not protected. If the wife works, her elegance will be diminished.

"If the female works, the family will be destroyed. If the widow is employed, the veil is destroyed. If wives labor, society is destroyed."

However, patriarchal attitudes remain prevalent in the majority-Muslim nation. In a separate post, Tanzim cautioned men that their sons would not have a "modest" mother if they married "a woman who is accustomed to mixing freely with her male friends at university."

The remarks prompted a rebuke, with Jannatun Naeem Prity, a feminist writer based in Paris, pointing out that the Bangladesh team jerseys were produced in factories staffed predominantly by women.

"I feel sorry for you that you don't consider your mother to be a normal human being," she continued.

In a widely shared Facebook post, writer Swakrito Noman characterized the remarks as "deeply offensive" and demanded that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) question Tanzim and the player apologize.

Monday, journalist Mejbaul Haque added, "The status of such a perverted form of chauvinism cannot be tolerated. Regardless of how popular he is!"The BCB stated that it was conducting an investigation.

"The matter was brought to our attention. We are investigating," Jalal Yunus, the head of cricket operations for the organization, told AFP.After assisting Bangladesh win the Under-19 World Cup in 2020, Tanzim has played 12 first-class matches in his brief senior career.
