'We don't see that often': Manjrekar's 'no variation' remark on Akash Madhwal

The Mumbai Indians will face the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 of the 2023 Indian Premier League on Friday night, having defeated the Lucknow Super Giants with relative ease in the Eliminator. MI's star of the match was Akash Madhwal, who recorded the joint-most economical five-wicket haul in the annals of the league. In 3.3 overs, he allowed five runs and took five wickets, as LSG were struck out on 101 while chasing 183.

Madhwal took the first wicket of the innings when he dismissed Prerak Mankad for three, but his most effective over occurred during his second spell, when the uncapped pacer dismissed Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran off consecutive deliveries. While he castled Badoni, he induced a thick outside edge from Pooran, which Ishan Kishan caught easily behind the wickets.

Badoni attempted a wild cross-batted stroke against a back-of-the-length delivery from Madhwal, but was unable to get in the line of the ball. Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar recalled the dismissal and mentioned a particular aspect of Madhwal's bowling that could become a "trend" in Twenty20 cricket following MI's resounding victory.

Manjrekar stated that none of Madhwal's deliveries to Badoni featured "variations"; the pacer had bowled three balls to the LSG batsman prior to his dismissal.

"The dismissals of Badoni and Pooran demonstrated Madhwal's ability. No variation is his variation, which is something he does that we don't see very often these days and which is very distinctive. It could become a trend in the future. If two seam-up deliveries result in no hits, the batter will anticipate a change of pace. "He would prepare for a slower ball or a bouncer," Manjrekar explained on ESPNCricinfo as he analyzed Madhwal's bowling.

The victor of Qualifier 2 will face MS Dhoni and the Chennai Super Kings in the championship match.
