As both teams were observed challenging one another, Match 38 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi was filled with numerous intense moments on the field. A timed-out dismissal occurred for the first time in the annals of international cricket during the tense match. Angelo Mathews was dismissed in the first innings after Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan made an appeal for the unusual dismissal.

In the latter part of the second innings, the Sri Lankan all-rounder dismissed the Bangladesh captain in the 32nd over, providing an appropriate farewell. The southpaw gained the upper hand on the first delivery of the over by failing to read the slower ball delivered by Mathews. As the ball ascended through the air, Charith Asalanka captured it at short mid-off, effectively ending Shakib's innings.

Mathews indicated 'time over' for the Bangladesh captain at the crease by pointing to his forearm subsequent to dismissing Shakib.
