Shakib Al Hasan wishes to step down as Bangladesh captain ahead of World Cup 2023
Shakib Al Hasan was recalled as captain of the ODI side by the Bangladesh Cricket Board ahead of the Asia Cup 2023.
Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh's talismanic all-rounder, has reportedly expressed a desire to abdicate his position as captain of the ODI team after only a month in charge.
Shakib Al Hasan was reinstated as captain of the ODI side by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 and is also scheduled to lead the 'Bangla Tigers' in the 50-over World Cup, which takes place in India in October-November.
The Daily Star was informed by a BCB source that Shakib has informed the country's cricket governing body that he does not intend to command the team at the marquee event. The 36-year-old brought his predicament to the attention of BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon and Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha at midnight at Papon's residence. According to BCB sources, Shakib does not want unfit athletes on his team, which is one of the reasons he does not want to lead Bangladesh.
Tamim Iqbal has been battling a back ailment, but he has been named to Bangladesh's World Cup squad of 15 players. Fans are connecting the links and rumors of a possible cold war between two of Bangladesh's finest cricketers are growing stronger by the minute. This is not the first instance of tension between them.
Bangladesh's Asia Cup 2023 campaign was chaotic.
Bangladesh, commanded by Shakib, fluctuated in performance during the recently concluded Asia Cup. They dropped two matches to Sri Lanka and one to Pakistan. They ended the Super Four phase of the competition in third place on the points table after a decisive victory over Afghanistan and a nail-biting victory over India.
Currently, they are hosting a three-match ODI series against New Zealand. The series currently stands at 1-0 in favor of the Blackcaps, with the final match scheduled for Tuesday, September 26 in Mirpur.
