Joe Root opens up on prospect of batting at 3 in ongoing Ashes

Joe Root has been in outstanding form in 2023, accumulating 567 runs at an average of 81 in five Test matches. In the first innings of the first Test at Edgbaston, the star batsman blasted a belligerent hundred.

After a rare lapse in the second Test, Root will need to bring his A-game to Headingley for the third Test between the two archrivals. A stalemate in any of the three remaining Tests would be sufficient for Australia to retain possession of the Ashes urn.

Vice-captain Ollie Pope will be unavailable for the remainder of the series after dislocating his right shoulder while fielding in the Lord's Test and being ruled out for the remainder of the series. Root, who typically batters at No. 4 for England, could bat at No. 3 in Pope's absence. The former captain of England has stated that he has no issue batting outside of his normal position.

"I'm just excited to compete for England. Over the past couple of years, I've gained a solid comprehension of my game, and as I've said many times before, it's my turn as a senior player to give back to everyone who's had to put up with me as captain and doing things my way for so long. As quoted by Sky Sports in a press conference held prior to the Leeds Test, Root stated, "I'm there to try and score runs in whatever position that is and try to get back into the series."

"As a batting unit, I believe that our perspective on the game has changed significantly in the past 18 months, and for the better. This shift in perspective, I believe, enables you to embrace various situations and scenarios and to thrive in those positions and moments. I am confident that whoever it is will enjoy it and make the most of it."

Dan Lawerence possesses a steely disposition: Joe Root

With Pope out of the series, Dan Lawrence is expected to replace him in the starting lineup for the impending matches. Lawerence made his Test debut under the captaincy of Joe Root. The youthful batsman played his last Test against the West Indies over a year ago. He is in England's squad for the third Test, where he may replace the injured Pope.

Root believes that Lawrence is one of England's brightest prospects and that he possesses the "grit" necessary to perform on the international stage.

He scored 152 runs in the most recent Championship contest for Essex. You've seen a glimpse of what he's capable of in Test cricket, as he scored an outstanding 91 and was dismissed off the final delivery of the day in Barbados, having appeared destined for a century. I believe he will have a very fascinating career whenever the opportunity presents itself.

He has the determination to flourish at this level, along with a great game, making him an exciting prospect.
