ICC Men's Test Ranking: India Become Number 1 Test Team Ahead Of WTC Final

India has surpassed Australia to become the top-ranked team in the ICC Men's Test Ranking, according to the annual update released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday. The update drops results from the 2019-20 season and reflects all series concluded since May 2020. India surpasses Australia in the Men's Test Rankings a month before the ICC World Test Championship Final, bringing an end to Australia's 15-month reign at the summit of the rankings.

  • India is presently in first place with 121 points, followed by Australia in second with 116 points.
  • Prior to the annual update, Australia topped the rankings with 122 points, followed by India with 119 points.

The disparity between England and the second-placed team is reduced from 13 to two rating points as a result of their consistent performances in recent months and the reduced weighting of their 4-0 Ashes loss and 1-0 loss in the West Indies.

According to an ICC press release, the annual rankings evaluate all series completed since May 2020, with series completed before May 2022 weighted at 50 percent and all subsequent series weighted at 100 percent.

India's rating points have increased from 119 to 121 due to the fact that their 2-0 loss to New Zealand in March 2020 is no longer factored into the rankings, which evaluate series concluded prior to May 2022 at 50 percent and subsequent series at 100 percent.

Australia's home series victories against Pakistan (2-0) and New Zealand (3-0) in 2019/20 have been disregarded, while their 4-0 victory over England in 2021/22 has had its weight reduced by half. As a result, Australia's ranking fell from 121 to 116.

Australia will face India in the final of the ICC World Test Championship 2023 at The Oval beginning on 7 June 2023. Australia has been the top-ranked Test team since January 2022, while India's last month at the summit was in December 2021.
