BCCI provides major update on Shreyas Iyer injury
Iyer's journey back to the field was hindered just before India's Super Four match against Pakistan.
Shreyas Iyer's anxiously awaited return to cricket after a lengthy injury absence has not quite gone according to plan. The talented Indian batsman recently made his return during the Asia Cup, but his fitness has fans and cricket analysts questioning his preparedness for the upcoming ODI World Cup.
Iyer was unable to return to the pitch prior to India's Super Four match against Pakistan. He was about to take the field when an abrupt back spasm prevented him from playing. His replacement, KL Rahul, grasped the opportunity and played a brilliant innings, scoring a remarkable hundred that made headlines.
In the succeeding Super Four match against Sri Lanka, Iyer was again left out of the lineup, causing concern among fans and analysts. Ahead of the ODI World Cup in 2023, Iyer's endurance remains a significant concern.
Iyer's return to the Asia Cup, after being sidelined since March due to a back injury that necessitated surgery, was met with great anticipation. Iyer appeared to be on the mend during his most recent practice sessions, as he displayed no indications of discomfort while facing fast-bowling throwdowns and net bowlers.
However, the BCCI has made it plain that he is not yet at full fitness, which led to his exclusion from the Super Four's final match against Bangladesh. Also improbable is his participation in the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka on September 17.
With only three ODIs remaining against Australia and two practice matches, time is running out for the dynamic batsman. If he is not fully fit, Rahul will bat in his place, and Ishan Kishan will be given an opportunity to play regularly.
As India are scheduled to play three ODIs against Australia after the conclusion of the Asia Cup, it remains to be seen whether Iyer recovers in time for the ODI World Cup 2023.
