World Cup 2023: Shubman Gill to miss second match after getting hospitalized in Chennai
Gill missed India's first World Cup 2023 fixture against Australia due to dengue fever and is now expected to directly be part of India's third game.
Star India opener Shubman Gill, who has been hospitalized in Chennai for the past few days with dengue fever, will not be participating in India's second World Cup match against Afghanistan from Delhi. Reports indicate that Gill's platelet count has been significantly low for a considerable period of time; therefore, he has been prohibited from boarding a flight.
Gill, who was sidelined by dengue fever for India's first World Cup 2023 match against Australia, is now anticipated to participate directly in India's third match. As the opener was admitted to the Kaveri hospital in Chennai, BCCI physician Dr. Rizwan Khan, who is accompanying the team, is providing medical attention.
"On October 9, 2023, Team India batsman Shubman Gill will not be accompanying the group to Delhi. The opening batsman who was absent for the team's first match against Australia in Chennai during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 is scheduled to miss the team's next match on October 11 against Afghanistan in Delhi. BCCI's statement read, "He will remain in Chennai under the supervision of the medical staff."
Prior to being suspended for two games by illness, the prolific India opener had a sensational run in the ODI format in 2023 and was a surefire selection in India's XI for World Cup matches. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan batted at the top against Australia in Gill's absence. Despite pursuing a meager target of 200 runs, both openers for India in their opening World Cup match performed abysmally.
The vessel was steadied by the tenacious deliveries of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli after India fell to 2/3 in the first over, but ultimately triumphed by six wickets. On September 11, 2023, India will host their second match against Afghanistan in Delhi, with the intention of maintaining their winning momentum heading into the ODI World Cup.
