Sahan Arachchige to lead Sri Lankan squad for Asian Games 2023
Sri Lanka announced a team full of young and promising players who will take part in the Asian Games.
Due to the clash between the ODI World Cup and the cricket competition at the Asian Games 2023, teams like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh have decided to dispatch second-string squads to Hangzhou, China, in an effort to win gold. The cricket competition will be contested in T20 format. Sri Lanka announced an Asian Games team comprised primarily of youthful and promising athletes.
Sahan Arachchige, an all-rounder, has been designated captain of the team. Earlier this year, he made his international debut against the West Indies in an ICC World Cup Qualifier. Ashen Bandara, Nuwanidu Fernando, and Nuwan Thushara are the only other players with international experience. Bandara has participated in the most international matches for Sri Lanka, with six ODIs and five T20Is under his credit.
During their time in the Lanka Premier League (LPL), the players did, however, rub shoulders with some of the finest international cricket players. In addition, the majority of the players have extensive experience playing for the Sri Lanka 'A' team. Arachchige was named as a last-minute replacement for the injured Maheesh Theekshana prior to last week's Asia Cup 2023 championship match between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo.
Sri Lanka will begin its Asian Games 2023 campaign on October 4
Sri Lanka's squad for the 2023 Asian Games includes many exciting athletes, including Lasith Croospulle, Shevon Daniel, and Lahiru Samarakoon, among others. Croospulle had an outstanding LPL 2023 season, amassing 232 runs in eight games with an average of 33.14 and a strike rate of 139.8. Thushara, who has a slingy action similar to that of the legendary Lasith Malinga, had a successful LPL 2023 campaign, taking 11 wickets in seven matches at an average of 19.27 and a strike rate of 14.2.
Sri Lanka has been granted direct entrance into the quarterfinals based on its ICC ranking. On October 4, they will compete in the third quarterfinal against one of the qualifying teams.
