Mohammed Siraj reports corrupt aprroach made during India-Australia ODI series
Mohammed Siraj was approached for providing ‘inside information’ by a man who lost a big amount of money on betting.
Mohammed Siraj, the star pacer for Royal Challengers Bangalore, reported a "corrupt approach" to the BCCI's Anti-Corruption Unit earlier this week, according to a PTI report. The report states that an unidentified man sought inside information about his team before Australia's full-scale tour of the country in February of this year. The Team India pacer received a phone call and promptly informed ACU officials of the situation.
According to an informed source, the contact did not originate from a bookie but rather a driver from Hyderabad.
"A bookmaker did not approach Siraj. He is a Hyderabad-based driver who is habituated to wagering on India matches. After losing a significant amount of money on India events, he contacted Siraj via WhatsApp, a senior BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.
"Siraj promptly reported the approach. The law enforcement (Andhra Police) had apprehended the individual," the source added.Since S Sreesanth, Ankit Chavan, and Ajit Chandila, along with former CSK team principal Gurunath Meiyappan, were arrested on spot-fixing allegations, the BCCI has increased its ACU efforts.
Each team has a dedicated ACU official who remains at the same hotel and monitors all movements on the field. There is also a mandatory ACU workshop on dos and don'ts for players, and sanctions are in place if a player fails to report a corrupt approach.
In the first five games of the current season, Siraj has taken eight wickets for the RCB, demonstrating his excellence. The RCB have had an inconsistent start to their season, winning two of their first five games. The team is presently in eighth place in the standings with four points.
