Harmanpreet Kaur among three Indians in TIME's Emerging Leaders list

Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of the India Women's team, is one of three Indians named by TIME magazine as the top 100 emerging leaders shaping the globe. In addition to the captain, the list released on Wednesday, September 13 includes Nandita Venkatesan and Vinu Daniel.

Harmanpreet's 'fire and flair', which have been instrumental in molding women's cricket, were highlighted in the magazine. The magazine's press release also highlighted the cricketer's 171-run performance against Australia during the 2017 World Cup.

"Harmanpreet Kaur's dynamism and charisma have been crucial in elevating women's cricket from a marginal curiosity to one of the world's most valuable sporting assets. She achieved legendary status in 2017 when she scored a then-record 171 not out off 115 deliveries against Australia in a World Cup match, leaving spectators in awe of her extraordinary talent, according to a press release cited by The Indian Express.

The captain is currently out of action with the national team after receiving a two-match suspension for pulverizing the wickets during the third ODI against Bangladesh following her dismissal and expressing her displeasure with the umpires.

Harmanpreet also received three demerit points for expressing disagreement with the umpire's decision. This essentially means that the skipper will miss the initial matches of the Asian Games which is scheduled to begin on September 19, in Hangzhou, China.

The Asian Games will be led by vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, as she will be relegated to the sidelines due to her suspension. Notably, Harmanpreet has contributed significantly to the success of the national team and her Women's Premier League (WPL) team, Mumbai Indians (MI-W).

Harmanpreet lead her team to an outstanding victory in the WPL's inaugural championship match. In addition, she was named one of the top five cricketers of the year by WISDEN in 2023.
