Matches can shift from Colombo due to heavy rain

The Super Four matches and the final are scheduled to take place in Colombo, where there’s a lot of chance of rain in the coming weeks.

Matches can shift from Colombo due to heavy rain

The inaugural match for India in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 was interrupted by rain. The Men in Blue won the toss and elected to bat first against Pakistan, but the game was interrupted twice. The second inning was abandoned because no conclusive result was reached.

Asian Cricket Council (ACC) does not want the same event to occur in the future; therefore, it is anticipated that the venue in Sri Lanka will be changed. In the coming weeks, there is a high possibility of precipitation in Colombo, where the Super Four matches and the final will be played. The governing council is therefore frantic to relocate the event to Dambulla or Pallekele.

As a result of the broadcasters' and teams' reluctance to embrace the new development, there is no official communication regarding this matter. Notably, Sri Lanka does not typically host matches in September due to the monsoon; however, since India refused to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup, an exception was made.

Intriguingly, Pakistan Cricket Board, the tournament hosts, proposed to host the tournament in the UAE as well, but officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) declined.

Fans and broadcasters anticipate an official update within the next 24-48 hours. In the meantime, former PCB president Najam Sethi has already criticized BCCI over the venue change, and the situation is anticipated to deteriorate in the coming days.

The impending league match between India and Nepal is also anticipated to be affected by rain. In this scenario, the Men in Blue will advance to the next round, as the team commanded by Rohit Paudel lost the first match and India earned one point. Despite this, both teams are prepared for a 50-over match.
