Asia Cup 2023: Sri Lanka announces 15-member squad, big names misses out
Sri Lanka have announced their squad for Asia Cup 2023 under the captaincy of Dasun Shanaka.
Sri Lanka has finally announced their squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, which is scheduled to commence in Multan on August 30. In addition to Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Madushanka, and Lahiru Kumara, leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who completed the Lanka Premier League as the tournament's leading run-scorer and wicket-taker, will be absent from the marquee competition.
Consequently, the bowling unit appears a little pallid, but they have players with some international experience. Binura Fernando and Pramod Madushan have been added to the squad as replacements for the injured players, but a great deal will depend on Matheesha Pathirana and Kasun Rajitha, who have performed well in recent games.
Kusal Perera has rejoined the team after a two-year absence. However, the cricketer is currently recuperating from the flu, making his participation in the opening matches unlikely. However, when he returns, he will contribute much-needed experience to the squad and can even secure a spot in the ODI World Cup with strong performances.
Sri Lanka will face Bangladesh in the inaugural match
In their opening contest of the competition, the Dasun Shanaka-led squad will face Bangladesh. Bangladesh, who will be without Tamim Iqbal, have announced a strong but inexperienced squad for the competition. Despite this, the squad led by Shakib Al Hasan is optimistic about its prospects and will strive to reach the Super Four of the competition.
Sri Lanka will also have the same objective. They will play their league contests in Pakistan, but their Super Four matches will be played at home. Therefore, the objective will be to advance to the next round and then to once again contend for the championship.
