AB de Villiers opens up on Yuzvendra Chahal's Asia Cup exclusion
Chahal was shockingly excluded from the side as chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated that they are keeping an eye on the balance of the side.
Yuzvendra Chahal is one of the unluckiest players in world cricket, as he remains with the Indian team throughout the year but is unable to participate in the most significant ICC competitions. The selectors unexpectedly omitted the leg-spinner from the 2021 T20 World Cup squad, opting instead for the inexperienced Varun Chakaravarthy.
Chahal participated in the 2022 T20 World Cup but did not play.Chahal seems destined to skip yet another ICC tournament, this time the October 5 ODI World Cup. Before the World Cup, India will compete in the Asia Cup, which begins on 30 August. Chahal was unexpectedly omitted from the team after chief selector Ajit Agarkar expressed concern for the team's equilibrium.
It is believed that Axar Patel, a member of the team, was selected over Chahal due to his superior batting ability. The captain of the Indian cricket team, Rohit Sharma, stated that the veteran spinner may return to the World Cup squad when it is ultimately announced.
Former South African batsman AB de Villiers, who played a great deal of cricket with Chahal during their time at Royal Challengers Bangalore, noted that by omitting him from the Asia Cup squad, the selectors made it obvious that they were looking beyond his former teammate. De Villiers praised Chahal's abilities and believed he would have been an advantageous choice for India had he been selected.
"Chahal has been dropped, with selectors making their selection intentions plain. It's a bit of a letdown for me, as Yuzi is always quite useful and it's wonderful to have a leg-spinning option in your team. We are aware of his skill," de Villiers said on his YouTube channel.
India's Asia Cup campaign begins in Pallekele on September 2 against archrival Pakistan.
