World Cup 2023: England created unique ODI batting record against New Zealand
England became the first side in ODI history, where every batter scored in double digits in 4658 matches.
England's ODI World Cup 2023 season opener has been full of highs and lows. On October 5, the reigning champions faced up against Tom Latham's New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
England broke all previous records when they batted first after losing the toss and amassed 282 runs against New Zealand. In 4658 matches, England became the first team in ODI history to have every batsman score ten or more runs.
England, coming off strong performances, was unable to take advantage of their opportunity in the World Cup opening because they could not play at their best with the bat.
Buttler-Root contributes to England's decent total
In relation to the match, England chose to bat first, however their top order was unable to have any effect. Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow were removed from the game after scoring 14 and 33 runs, respectively.
Following the early setback, Joe Root's knock helped England's innings to stabilize. With his tenacious innings of 77 runs in 86 balls, the star batsman gave the team much-needed optimism. Furthermore, captain Jos Buttler produced yet another outstanding innings when Moeen Ali and Harry Brook left the game with scores of 11 and 25, respectively.
With 43 runs in 42 deliveries, Buttler contributed to putting some runs on the board. Afterwards, England scored 282 runs in the first innings thanks to brief appearances from the lower order.
Matt Henry claimed the most wickets for New Zealand, claiming three in all. Trent Boult and Rachin Ravindra both scored one wicket, while Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner each claimed two wickets.
